ŠOKIRAŠ ME, MAJKE MI
SARAJEVO SCENE 1980-1992

This first exhibit of the Ex-Yu Rock Centar was a natural choice, as the golden years of the Sarajevo rock scene is the perfect epicenter from which the rest of the Ex-Yu Rock Centar will emanate. Each display consists of authentic, original artifacts that, together with the audio and video clips, help to illustrate the rich history of Sarajevo rock.

ROOTS

The Roots display takes a dive into history, to show diehard fans of Ex-Yu Rock and newcomers to the scene how the first decades of rock developed and influenced the next generation of musicians. It is notable that in this period one can already see the authors and performers who were creating a new sound, and the individuals who would go on to play in one, two, three or more groups, with the musical DNA spreading and regenerating with every chord change.

new primitivism

The New Primitivism movement is presented as an art and idea in itself – as it was truly innovative for its time, influencing both music and the broader culture of comedy, radio and television. Creativity and irreverence reflected the global cultural and social flux of the time, both bridging sound and genres and creating space for new musical interpretations. Throughout the region, listeners gladly became familiar with Sarajevo’s distinctive slang and humorous way of viewing life and art – a linguistic gift that survives to this day through the music and lyrics.

POP ROCK

Sarajevo’s Pop Rock scene is displayed to illustrate how these bands of musicians – some hardly out of high school – made a splash not only in their hometown, but throughout Yugoslavia. Screaming hordes of fans echoed images of crying Beatles admirers. And the texts of the songs they sang made millions of people throughout the region familiar with Sarajevo, with Bascarsija slang, and with elements of Sarajevo’s culture tuned to a rockin’ chord.

ROCK SCENE

The Rock Scene is highlighted to illustrate the development of artists and bands in the 70s and early 80s, with band members coming, going, staying and evolving. One need only listen to three or four of the greats highlighted in these exhibits to recognize that they were both influenced by and contributed to emerging global rock sounds. And they all showed that they could fill a stadium as easily as any rock band.

DEMO SCENE

The Demo Scene displays are perhaps the most original and critical of the exhibits on display. The stories of these demo bands, and the audio and video traces they leave behind, serve not only as an archive of their work and innovation, but demonstrate the unbelievably rich music scene in this period, and the embryos from which many musicians would emerge to establish bands that became a household name. This element of the exhibit will grow and become stronger with time – if you have information on these bands, or on other bands, please reach out to us via email (info@ex-yurock.com) or social media and help us to tell the full story.

This is only the first chapter of the Ex-Yu Rock Centar, but an important and necessary element to set the scene for the exhibits and sounds yet to come. We hope you love it as much as we do.
