60 YEARS OF MACEDONIAN ROCK
1963-2023

In the early 1960s, in Macedonia, as in most urban environments in ex-Yugoslavia, the sound of the first electric guitars began to fill the premises of local communities where at the dances an unusual number of young people with long hair dressed in jeans began to gather, “performing some strange movements with their bodies, dance-like.”

While the adults characterized this phenomenon as some immoral act of Tito’s youth, for that same youth it was quite clear that something new was happening, something that would leave a lasting mark on the second half of the 20th century, everywhere in the world, so in Yugoslavia and Macedonia as well.
