Rock For Unity is an 18-month project that aims to bring a new cultural dimension to the 3 partner countries – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia but also the entire Western Balkan region, Europe and beyond. Through project implementation, partners aimed to give their contribution to preserving and promoting rich Ex-Yu Rock heritage, whose origins date back to 1960s, reaching a creative peak in the late 70s and 80s, and is experiencing a creative revival today. Outside the English-speaking world, rock in the former Yugoslavia was among the most innovative in the world, including guitar rock, punk/alternative and pop. In addition to meeting Creative Europe’s objective of innovation in the cultural sphere, and aligning with strategic priorities including social inclusion and digital innovation, the implementation of the Rock4Unity Project ensured the achievement of 3 main results:

  1. An enhanced set of exhibits at the Ex-Yu Rock Centar in Sarajevo and a robust set of integrated digital tools aimed at improving the “in real life” (IRL) and online visitor experience;
  2. A network of youth and musicians in the 3 countries learning from the past and helping to build the next generation of rock;
  3. A stronger creative and cultural brand that strengthens regional artistic collaboration and enhances cultural, social and economic integration into the European space.

The Creative Europe grant supported the development of several digital tools; the development of 3 new thematic exhibits; digitization of a total of 7 exhibits for online dissemination; and development of 3 youth-education focused curricular modules (Rockin’ History, Rock the Peace and RockTours) that were implemented in the 3 partner countries and made available online for use throughout the region. While around 100 youth and artists will directly benefit, the resulting IRL and online results will reach thousands in the region, among the diaspora and among culture lovers globally.

Below you can find downloadable material related to the development of the project, which can suit the future organisation of projects promoting the cultural significance of rock music in an interactive manner.

ROCKTOURS WORKSHOPS

Within RockTours activity, selected young people from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia will be engaged in their communities to research and map places that have played an important part in rock and music history (eg. musicians’ birth homes, influential performance halls and concerts venues, recording studios etc.).

The activity entails development of training curriculum and related workshop materials as well as selection of 5 youth participants from each one of 3 partner countries. Three separate in-person training one-day workshops will be held in each country, with training conducted by the 3 partners in each country. At the end of the training the participants will select several local sites to potentially include in the RockTour itinerary. The youth participants will be encouraged to document their participation in the event throughout the day on social media etc.

Following this initial scouting activity, the 3 partners will review the participants’ site proposals, and agree on 10-15 priority sites. The youth teams will then go back to all/selected sites with a professional photographer/videographer to get high quality photographs to use in the RockTours printed and electronic materials.

Finally the youth, together with organizational focal points and subject matter experts, will prepare to write Walking Tour content which once finalized and translated will be used for RockTours mobile app development. The mapped stops will be linked through a series of QR codes to a mobile app, providing citizens and tourists with engaging content on regional rock history. The curricular materials will be shared online and promoted so other educators and youth leaders may use them for other tourism promotion activities.

ROCKIN' HISTORY ONLINE WORKSHOP

In preparation for the “Rockin’ History” activity, a minimum of 15 young people from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia are going to be selected to participate in an online workshop. This workshop is the initial phase of the two-stage “Rockin’ History” activity. The project consists of organisation of the online workshop and facilitation and filming of the interviews with select rock musicians.

As the first stage of the project, organizers will develop a youth-oriented, oral history training workshop including the necessary curriculum and guidance. The online workshop will be conducted on the Zoom platform, with training sessions led by an expert in the field of Ex-Yu Rock. Participants will have the opportunity to choose among several Ex-Yu Rock performers and will work on the formulation of their questions and their approaches to the recording of the interviews before conducting the interviews themselves.

In the second stage of Rockin’ History training program, the three partner organizations will assist the participants with the schedule and search for interview locations, and will establish the contact between the participants – to be divided into youth teams – and the Ex-Yu Rock musicians or prominent members of the industry for their one-on-one interviews. The participants themselves will do the interviews (5 in each country, 15 in total) and a professional videographer will film them.

The professional videographer filming the interviews will prepare full interview files with simple introductory graphics/closings for every interview in post-production and add subtitles as well. The full interview files will be saved in the EYRS project archives for their historical value, and shorter educational and outreach clips will be produced out of them. The Youth journalists will use social media to promote this process, and provide “teasers” of the interviews.

Finally, following the completion of Rockin’History activities, a 7-8 minute-long video will be produced out of all collected audio-visual footage, featuring 15 clips created by participants from three different cities.

ROCK THE PEACE WORKSHOPS

“Rock the Peace” is a comprehensive program consisting of two levels of training: an initial online session followed by an in-person workshop. The first segment focuses on Training of Trainers (ToT) and aims to deliver a one-day workshop, complete with educational materials, tailored to introduce secondary school students (aged 15-19) to music from the former Yugoslavia and beyond, which advocates for peace, social justice, and societal change. Highlighting the efforts of numerous Ex-Yu rock artists who vehemently opposed the rise of nationalism and the conflicts of the 1990s, these workshops illuminate the power of music as a platform for expressing political dissent and challenging governmental policies. Featured artists include iconic bands like EKV, Kud Idijoti, Partibrejkers, Rambo Amadeus, as well as renowned Western musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Joan Baez, Stiff Little Fingers, and Rage Against the Machine.

Participants (aged 20-25) will be recruited for an interactive online Train-the-Trainer event conducted in English, with 2-3 representatives from each country. Encouraging active engagement, participants will complete self-assessment questionnaires upon completion to facilitate collaborative learning.

Project management will collaborate with and mentor the three trainer teams, aiding in the planning and execution of their own in-person Rock the Peace workshops in their respective countries. This includes partnering with trainers, EYRS, and Alicorn to recruit participants (aged 15-19), with a target of 7-10 participants per country. Additionally, Eurothink Project Management aims to involve at least one local musician per location to speak or perform at each event, with the possibility of recruiting additional musicians to participate online or send video greetings to inspire youth participants.

Three one-day, in-person workshops will be conducted, with representatives from each of the three partner organizations present to observe and provide support as necessary. Active engagement will be encouraged among the youth attendees, with promotion efforts extended through social media platforms. Participants will be invited to complete self-assessment forms to aid in project evaluation and learning. A post-workshop lyrics competition will be organized in which workshop participants will have one month to write lyrics that reflect the values of Rock the Peace. A three-member jury will be composed, which will evaluate the songs written by the participants during the in-person training and declare the best texts as winners.
